Animals in Telugu Transliteration: A Beginner’s Guide

You can start with the transliterations for cow, dog, chicken or hen, peacock, goat, sheep, and fish. Keep labels separate from sentences: the identification example means “This is a cow,” while the other animal entries are vocabulary items. Roman spellings are useful reading aids, not one universal pronunciation standard.

Start with these expressions

EnglishTransliterationNative script
Cow aavu ఆవు
Dog kukka కుక్క
Chicken or hen kodi కోడి
Peacock nemali నెమలి
Goat meka మేక
Sheep gorre గొర్రె
Fish chepa చేప
This is a cow. idi oka aavu. ఇది ఒక ఆవు.

Use a label differently from a sentence

When you are naming an animal from a picture, a single animal label is enough. The selected labels give you focused vocabulary for cow, dog, chicken or hen, peacock, goat, sheep, and fish. The dictionary evidence independently records the cow and dog entries as nouns meaning those animals [1] [3].

A complete sentence does a different job: it identifies something as an animal rather than merely naming the animal. Use the selected identification example when pointing at a picture or answering “What is this?” Do not treat every short item in the list as a sentence. This distinction helps you choose what to memorise for a word-recognition task and what to use as a model for identifying an animal.

Also, read the Roman spellings as practical learner aids, not as a guarantee of one universal system. The dictionary’s cow entry shows more than one Roman representation [1]. For now, keep the spelling shown in the table consistent instead of mixing systems.

Try it

You point to a picture and want to say, “This is a cow.” Which selected example should you choose?

Choose your answer before reading on.

Check your answer:

Use expression 8 in the table above.

Choose the example whose English meaning identifies the pictured animal. The other selected animal entries are standalone labels, so they name an animal but do not express the complete identification.

Cover the English meanings and test yourself on the seven animal labels. Then practise the identification sentence when pointing to a cow picture, keeping the Roman spelling unchanged.
