Common Places in Telugu Transliteration: Names and Location Sentences

For common places in Telugu, use a standalone entry when naming a destination, such as a temple, mosque, market, hospital or school. Use a complete sentence when asking where a place is or stating its location. The examples include both standalone names and complete location sentences.

Start with these expressions

EnglishTransliterationNative script
Temple gudi గుడి
Mosque maseedu మసీదు
Market bajaaru బజారు
The temple is in our town. gudi maa oorulo undi. గుడి మా ఊరులో ఉంది.
The hospital is in the town. aasupatri oorulo undi. ఆసుపత్రి ఊరులో ఉంది.
Hospital aasupatri ఆసుపత్రి
Where is the school? badi ekkada undi బడి ఎక్కడ ఉంది?
School badi బడి

Choose a label or a complete location sentence

The practical distinction is whether you are naming a place or communicating its location. A standalone entry can work as a label or answer to a prompt such as “Which place?” The set includes entries for temple, mosque, market, hospital and school. The dictionary passages independently record the meanings of the temple, mosque and market entries [1][2][3].

A complete location question does more: it asks where the school is. A complete statement gives location information, as in the examples about the temple being in the speaker’s town and the hospital being in the town. Do not treat the one-word school entry as a question, and do not treat a location statement as merely another vocabulary label.

Apply this today by checking the English task first. If you only need the place name, choose the short entry. If you need to ask where it is, choose the school question. If you need to tell someone where it is, choose the relevant complete statement. These examples show the sentence types; they do not establish that every place name can automatically replace every other one.

Try it

You are asking someone where the school is. Should you use the standalone school name or the longer school question?

Choose your answer before reading on.

Check your answer:

Use expression 7 in the table above.

Choose the longer school entry because your goal is to ask about location. The standalone entry only names the place; it does not form the question you need.

Cover the English meanings and sort each selected example as a place name, a location question or a location statement. Then reveal the table and choose the matching row for one real direction request.
