Punjabi Common Verbs 3: Transliteration Guide
This Punjabi list includes five standalone action-word entries—sit, run, work, walk, and stand—and three complete sentence examples about studying, playing, and working. Use the Roman transliterations as the provided reading aids, but do not treat an isolated verb entry as a full sentence with a subject and situation.
Start with these expressions
| English | Transliteration | Native script |
|---|---|---|
| To sit | baithna | ਬੈਠਣਾ |
| To run | bhajjna | ਭੱਜਣਾ |
| To work | kamm karna | ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨਾ |
| To walk | turna | ਤੁਰਨਾ |
| To stand | khalona | ਖਲੋਣਾ |
| Reena studies every day. | rina roz parhdi hai. | ਰੀਨਾ ਰੋਜ਼ ਪੜ੍ਹਦੀ ਹੈ। |
| The children play outside. | bachche bahar khedde han. | ਬੱਚੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਖੇਡਦੇ ਹਨ। |
| He works in the office. | oh daftar vich kamm karda hai. | ਉਹ ਦਫ਼ਤਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। |
Use an action word differently from a full sentence
When you are building a flashcard, treat the entries meaning “to sit,” “to run,” “to work,” “to walk,” and “to stand” as vocabulary for naming actions. They are useful labels, but they do not by themselves tell you who performs the action or what is happening around it.
The entries meaning “Reena studies every day,” “The children play outside,” and “He works in the office” are different: each gives a subject and a complete situation. Use these as sentence-level examples rather than replacing their whole meaning with a single English verb.
The dictionary passage directly supports the sitting entry as meaning “to sit” or “to sit down” [2]. It also records the standing entry with meanings including “to stand” and “to stop” [3]. That makes the distinction practical: learn the English gloss for an isolated action, but preserve the complete subject-and-situation meaning when studying a sentence. The available evidence does not establish broader pronunciation, tense, agreement, or regional rules, so keep this guide focused on vocabulary recognition and the transliteration aids.

Use expression 1 in the table above.
Choose this entry because its English meaning is “to sit,” making it the standalone action-word match rather than one of the complete sentence examples.
Review the five action meanings first, then read the three sentence meanings aloud from their Roman transliterations without turning the sentences into isolated verb labels.
