Malayalam Common Places Transliteration: Labels and Location Questions

This guide covers selected Malayalam place labels for market, school, clinic, post office, and temple, alongside complete questions asking where a hospital or school is and whether something is here. Use a place-label form when naming a destination; use a complete question when requesting or checking location information.

Where is the school? skool eviteyaan? സ്കൂൾ എവിടെയാണ്?
Is it here? ivideyaano? ഇവിടെയാണോ?

Separate place labels from complete location questions

The most useful distinction here is function, not length. A place-label form names a destination or location: the selected entries include a market, school, clinic, post office, and temple. The post-office entry is a two-word label, so do not assume that every place name must be one word. The market entry is also supported by a dictionary passage describing a fair or weekly or annual market [1]. That confirms the lexical meaning, but it does not establish every modern regional preference.

The complete questions do something different. One asks where a hospital is, another asks where a school is, and one checks whether something is here. Use the labels when identifying a destination in a note, sign, or conversation. Use the question forms when you need location information. This prevents a common learner mistake: treating a place name as if it already asks for directions. These selected forms are a focused reference, not a complete list of Malayalam places or a full directions conversation.

Try it

You are checking whether a place is here. Which selected item means “Is it here?”

Choose your answer before reading on.

Check your answer:

Use expression 8 in the table above.

Choose the item whose English meaning is a location check. It is a complete question, unlike the entries that only name destinations.

Review the selected examples once, then sort them into two groups: place labels and location questions. When you next see a Malayalam place term, ask whether you are naming the destination or asking where it is.
