Animals in Hindi Transliteration: A Focused Starter Guide
For Hindi animal vocabulary in Roman letters, begin with the terms for cat, cow, and fish. The examples also show how to identify a cat or cow, correct an identification by naming a dog, and say that something is not a cat or bird. This is a focused starter set, not a complete animal list.
Start with these expressions
| English | Transliteration | Native script |
|---|---|---|
| Cat | billi | बिल्ली |
| Cow | gaay | गाय |
| Fish | machhli | मछली |
| This is a cat. | yeh billi hai. | यह बिल्ली है। |
| This is a cow. | yeh gaay hai. | यह गाय है। |
| No, this is a dog. | nahi, yeh kutta hai. | नहीं, यह कुत्ता है। |
| This is not a cat. | yeh billi nahi hai. | यह बिल्ली नहीं है। |
| This is not a bird. | yeh chidiya nahi hai. | यह चिड़िया नहीं है। |
Name an animal or identify what you see
Use the short entries in the table as animal vocabulary: they give you the Roman-letter forms for cat, cow, and fish. The dictionary passages support those meanings directly: the cat entry defines the word as “cat” [1], the cow entry as “a cow” [2], and the fish entry as “a fish” [3].
The longer entries do a different job. They are complete statements about something in front of you. The positive forms identify what it is: one identifies a cat and another identifies a cow. The negative forms say what it is not: one rejects “cat” and another rejects “bird”. Do not memorise a full sentence as though it were only the animal name.
There is one useful trap to avoid. The dog example begins with a negative response, but its identification is positive: the speaker rejects a previous idea and then says that the animal is a dog. So separate the response from the proposition. If you are simply learning names, use the short vocabulary entries. If you are pointing at something, choose a complete identifying statement; if you are correcting or denying an identification, choose a negative example. This set deliberately covers only the animals and situations, rather than claiming to be a complete Hindi animal vocabulary list.

Try it
You point at an animal and want to say that it is not a cat. Which table entry fits?
Choose your answer before reading on.
Check your answer:
Use expression 7 in the table above.
Choose the complete negative identification, not the standalone word for cat. It fits because the situation requires a statement rejecting the cat identification.
Cover the English column. First recall the three short animal names, then decide whether each longer entry identifies an animal, corrects an identification, or denies one.
