Emotions in Urdu Transliteration: Words vs Complete Statements
Urdu transliteration examples here fall into two useful groups: standalone labels such as worried, happy, and sad, and complete first-person statements such as “I am happy” and “I am sad.” The angry statement is also complete, while the separate angry entry is only a label. Use the sentence forms when describing your own feeling.
Start with these expressions
| English | Transliteration | Native script |
|---|---|---|
| Worried | pareshan | پریشان |
| Happy | khush | خوش |
| Sad | udaas | اداس |
| I am happy. | main khush hoon. | میں خوش ہوں۔ |
| I am sad. | main udaas hoon. | میں اداس ہوں۔ |
| I am angry. | main gusse mein hoon. | میں غصے میں ہوں۔ |
| Angry | gussa | غصہ |
Recognise the difference between a label and a statement
Start by separating a feeling label from a statement about yourself. In this set, the standalone entries give an English emotion meaning: worried, happy, or sad. The dictionary evidence supports these meanings: pareshan includes troubled or distressed [1], khush includes happy or glad [2], and udaas includes sad or dejected [3].
Then look at the English gloss. A complete statement explicitly says that the speaker has the feeling, as in “I am happy,” “I am sad,” or “I am angry.” The separate angry entry is useful as a label, but it is not the same selected example as the first-person angry statement. For today’s practical task, choose a complete statement when you want to tell a family member how you feel; choose a standalone item when you are naming or revising the emotion. This is a way to navigate the examples, not a claim about every Urdu sentence.

Try it
You are texting a family member to say that you are sad. Which example is a complete statement about your own feeling rather than a standalone emotion label?
Choose your answer before reading on.
Check your answer:
Use expression 5 in the table above.
This choice fits because its English meaning is a first-person statement: the speaker says they are sad. The standalone sad entry names the feeling only, so it does not express the full message by itself.
Before using an emotion expression, decide whether you are naming the feeling or reporting your own state. Test yourself with happy, sad, and angry, then check whether you selected a label or a complete first-person statement.
