Directions in Kannada Transliteration: Left, Right and Straight
For directions in Kannada transliteration, learn the short forms for to the left, to the right and straight or directly. The matching go instructions add the form meaning go, creating complete directions for left, right and straight. Near and far are useful distance vocabulary, not complete route instructions here.
Start with these expressions
| English | Transliteration | Native script |
|---|---|---|
| Left | edakke | ಎಡಕ್ಕೆ |
| Right | balakke | ಬಲಕ್ಕೆ |
| Straight | neravagi | ನೇರವಾಗಿ |
| Go straight | neravagi hogi | ನೇರವಾಗಿ ಹೋಗಿ |
| Go left | edakke hogi | ಎಡಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗಿ |
| Go right | balakke hogi | ಬಲಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗಿ |
| Near | hattira | ಹತ್ತಿರ |
| Far | doora | ದೂರ |
Match the direction with the complete instruction
When you are learning directions, do not treat the English labels left, right and straight as interchangeable with full sentences. Learn each short item as a direction: to the left, to the right, or straight and directly. Then compare it with the matching example that includes the element meaning go.
This gives you three useful study pairs. The left item becomes the complete go-left instruction; the right item becomes the complete go-right instruction; and the straight item becomes the complete go-straight instruction. The practical point is to choose the longer form when your intended meaning is explicitly telling someone to go, rather than memorising only an English one-word label.
Near and far need separate treatment. The documented meanings for the near word include “near,” while the far word covers “distant,” “far from,” and distance. That supports learning them as distance vocabulary. It does not establish them as complete route instructions, so do not extend this set by assuming that a distance word alone means “go far.”

Try it
You are pointing someone along a road and want to give the complete instruction “Go straight.” Which example should you choose?
Choose your answer before reading on.
Check your answer:
| English | Transliteration | Native script |
|---|---|---|
| Go straight | neravagi hogi | ನೇರವಾಗಿ ಹೋಗಿ |
Choose the example whose meaning is the full go-straight instruction. It pairs the straight direction with the element that makes the instruction explicit, rather than giving only the shorter direction word.
Cover the English meanings and rehearse the three pairs: left with go left, right with go right, and straight with go straight. Keep near and far in a separate distance group, and practise recognising whether an expression names a direction or gives an explicit instruction.
