Common Places in Tamil Transliteration: Labels and Location Questions

For common places in Tamil, use the transliterations for market, school, temple, hospital, mosque, and church as place labels. To ask about location, use the longer market question or the general location question instead. The key practical distinction is a name for a place versus a complete question about where it is.

Start with these expressions

Market sandhai சந்தை
School palli பள்ளி
Temple kovil கோவில்
Hospital maruthuvamanai மருத்துவமனை
Mosque masoodi மசூதி
Church devaalayam தேவாலயம்
What is the market's location? sandhai enge irukku சந்தை எங்கே இருக்கு?

Use a place label differently from a location question

Start with the standalone entries when you are naming or identifying a destination: market, school, temple, hospital, mosque, and church. The dictionary evidence supports market as a meaning for the market entry [1], school as one documented meaning of the school entry [2], and temple for the temple entry [3]. These are useful labels, but a label alone does not ask where something is.

For directions or family conversations, choose a complete location question instead. The market-specific question identifies the place and asks for its location, while the general location question can be used when the thing being discussed is already clear. This is the practical test: if your English starts with “Where is...?”, select a question entry; if you only need to name the destination, select a place label.

The Roman spellings here are reading aids supplied with the learning material. Do not treat them as a complete pronunciation system: the dictionary uses a different romanisation style for some of the same lexical items [1][2][3].

Try it

You are asking a relative where the market is. Which entry should you choose?

Choose your answer before reading on.

Check your answer:

Use expression 7 in the table above.

Choose this entry because it names the market and asks for its location in one complete question. A standalone market label would identify the destination but would not express the request for where it is.

Cover the English glosses and practise choosing a label when naming a destination, then choosing the question entry when asking where that destination is.
