Animals in Bengali Transliteration: A Practical Starter Guide

For “animals in Bengali transliteration,” start with five supplied animal labels: cow, dog, cat, fish and tiger. Then learn three short forms for identifying or confirming what you see. Use a standalone word to name an animal, an identification sentence to point it out, and the affirmative sentence to confirm it.

Start with these expressions

EnglishTransliterationNative script
Cow goru গরু
Dog kukur কুকুর
Cat biral বিড়াল
Fish machh মাছ
Tiger bagh বাঘ
This is a cow eta goru এটা গরু
This is a dog eta kukur এটা কুকুর
Yes, this is a cow. hyan, eta goru হ্যাঁ, এটা গরু।

Name, identify, or confirm

Use a standalone animal word when you are naming or recalling the animal. Use the longer identification form when you are pointing something out: it does more than label the animal; it says what the thing is. The affirmative form adds confirmation, so it fits a reply such as “Yes, this is a cow.”

This distinction helps you choose between the cow and dog labels and their corresponding identification sentences. The cat, fish and tiger entries are also standalone labels, so they are useful for vocabulary recall rather than complete identification replies.

The learner-facing spellings here are practical transliteration aids, not a claim that one Romanisation is universal. The dictionary evidence is narrower: its cow excerpt records an alternative-spelling entry [1], while the dog and fish excerpts include the meanings “the dog” and “fish” [2] [3]. Those passages do not independently validate every displayed transliteration or every complete sentence.

Try it

During a family video call, someone points to a cow and you want to reply, “Yes, this is a cow.” Which example fits best?

Use expression 8 in the table above.

Choose the affirmative identification form because the situation requires both confirmation and identification. A standalone animal label only names the animal, while the shorter identification form identifies it without the initial confirmation.

Cover the English meanings and recall the five standalone labels. Then practise switching to the identification form whenever you point at an animal, and to the affirmative form when you are agreeing with someone’s identification.
