Colors in Bengali Transliteration: 7 Useful Terms and One Sentence Pattern

Learn Bengali color names as standalone vocabulary first, including red, blue, green, yellow, black, white, and orange. The deck also gives a complete sentence for identifying something as red. Use the standalone term when naming a color; use the sentence pattern when making a full identification.

Start with these expressions

EnglishTransliterationNative script
Red lal লাল
Blue nil নীল
Green shobuj সবুজ
Yellow holud হলুদ
Black kalo কালো
White shada সাদা
Orange komola কমলা
This is red. eta lal rong এটা লাল রং

Name a colour or identify an object

The selected colour entries are standalone vocabulary: use one when someone asks for a colour name or when you are labelling an item. The dictionary passages independently define the red, blue, and green entries as colour words, with the red and green entries also recorded as adjective and/or noun uses [1][2][3]. That supports treating them as labels rather than complete utterances.

The deck also includes a complete example meaning “This is red.” Choose that pattern when you are pointing to an object and making a full identification. Do not assume that saying only the colour word means “this object is [colour]”; it supplies the colour name, while the sentence supplies the whole statement. The same practical distinction applies when you learn the other selected colour labels, but the complete example specifically demonstrates red.

For transliteration practice, keep the deck’s Roman forms together with their English meanings. This guide does not claim that those spellings are the only possible romanisation or give an exact pronunciation rule. First recall the label; then decide whether your situation needs only a colour name or a complete identification.

Try it

You are pointing to a red jumper and answering only the question “Which colour is it?” Which selected entry should you use?

Choose your answer before reading on.

Check your answer:

Use expression 1 in the table above.

Choose the standalone red colour entry because the task asks for the colour name only. The complete red sentence would add a full identification, which is unnecessary when the object and the question already make the situation clear.

Cover the English labels and recall each selected Roman form. Then practise the switch: give only the colour name when naming a colour, and use the complete red example when pointing something out as a full statement.
