Animals in Punjabi Transliteration: Words and Complete Sentences

To learn animals in Punjabi transliteration, begin with the dog, cat, cow and fish entries, then notice the difference between a standalone animal label and a complete message. The list includes both kinds: individual words for naming animals and examples that say what something is, whose it is, or where it is.

Start with these expressions

EnglishTransliterationNative script
Dog kutta ਕੁੱਤਾ
Cat billi ਬਿੱਲੀ
Cow gaan ਗਾਂ
Fish machhi ਮੱਛੀ
Animal janwar ਜਾਨਵਰ
This is an animal. ih janwar hai. ਇਹ ਜਾਨਵਰ ਹੈ।
This is my dog. ih mera kutta hai. ਇਹ ਮੇਰਾ ਕੁੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
The cat is in the kitchen. billi rasoi vich hai. ਬਿੱਲੀ ਰਸੋਈ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈ।

Use an animal word as a label, not a whole message

Use a standalone animal entry when you are naming or identifying something on its own—for example, while pointing at a picture, labelling a flashcard, or answering a one-word vocabulary question. The selected entries include individual meanings for dog, cat, cow, fish and animal. The dictionary excerpts document dog [1], cat specifically in the sense “she-cat” [2], and cow [3]. These passages support the recorded meanings, but they do not establish pronunciation, regional frequency or every conversational use.

A complete sentence does more work. The sentence entries express three practical situations: identifying something as an animal, saying that the dog belongs to you, and giving the cat’s location. When speaking with family, choose the sentence entry when you need to communicate one of those messages; do not expect an isolated animal word to express ownership, identity or location by itself. This guide therefore helps you recognise the difference between vocabulary recall and a ready-made message, without claiming to cover all Punjabi grammar or conversation.

Try it

At a family gathering, you want to say “This is my dog,” rather than simply name the animal. Which entry should you choose?

Choose your answer before reading on.

Check your answer:

Use expression 7 in the table above.

Choose the entry whose English meaning is “This is my dog.” It is a complete supplied message that identifies the animal and states ownership, unlike the standalone dog vocabulary entry, which only names the animal.

Cover the English meanings and decide whether each selected entry is a label or a complete message. Then use the sentence entries when you need to identify, claim or locate an animal.
